the Mighty Handful

Russia's leading composer group. Members are Miri Barakilev (1837-1910), Aleksandr Borodin (1833-87), Tszari Kui (1835-1918), Modesto Mussorgsky (1839-81), Nikolai Rimski-Korsakoff (1844-1908).

They tried composing and studying to establish Russian national music music after succeeding Mikhail · Grinka (1804-1857), a pioneer of modern Russian music.

Tchaikovsky and "5 people"

Peter and Tchaikovsky (1840 - 93) are famous composers in the same period of Russia. Tchaikovsky graduates as a first-grader at the Petersburg Conservatory, which was established in 1862, and then taught at the Moscow Conservatory, which was established in 1866.

Meanwhile, Balakirev who wanted the name of a genius pianist at a young age gets a later "5 people" when he is entrusted with the end of the line of Russian music from Grinda of the bedside in Petersburg, and in 1862 it opens a free music school.

The Petersburg Conservatory and Free Music School, which was established in the same year, were quite different, although they were institutions that learned the same music.

The Petersburg Conservatory was a so-called elite school to learn Western music's advanced music, while the free music school made by Barakilef was a school for popular music to popularize people. This difference can be said to be a difference in the position of each founder.

The Petersburg Conservatory was opened in Anton Rubinstein (1829 - 94) at the house of a Jewish merchant, and his brother, Tchaikovsky, a friend of Nikolai Rubinstein (1835 - 81) who opened the Moscow Conservatory, was also poor They were poor people such as aristocrats who had to live music as a profession.

On the other hand, "five people" except for Barakiref were all aristocratic and had a profession in addition to music.

This difference may have made a difference in thinking about music.

Then in 1871 when Rimsky-Korsakov was appointed Professor of Composition at the Petersburg Conservatory, the difference between them became gone, and Rimsky-Korsakoff became a professional musician.
