Arranged for brass quintet, this piece is John Powell’s “Test Drive” from the film How to Train Your Dragon.
Featured in the memorable scene where Hiccup and his dragon, Toothless, take flight for the first time, the piece is characterized by its magnificent orchestration and exhilarating sense of momentum.
From the powerful rhythms at the opening, the music gradually expands before surging toward its thrilling climax. This dramatic progression makes the piece particularly well suited to the rich and powerful sound of a brass quintet.
In this arrangement, I have aimed to preserve the sense of scale, excitement, and exhilaration of the original while taking full advantage of the unique sound of a brass quintet consisting of two trumpets, horn, trombone, and tuba.
For the cluster section (D) depicting the falling scene, feel free to perform it freely and expressively while imagining the scene itself.
This arrangement is an excellent choice for concert programs, especially those featuring film or anime music, as well as for ensembles looking to expand their brass quintet repertoire.
Enjoy the exhilarating sensation of “taking flight” through the sound of five brass instruments!
